1. The Dark Knight (2008)

This is the second movie in the Batman series. It was a smashing success, earning a staggering $158.4 million in the United States in its first weekend. It went past the $300 million mark in just 10 days and the half a billion barrier in just 43 days. It went on to gross more than $1 billion making it the 19th highest grossing film of all time (unadjusted for inflation).

Although Bale earned a lot of rave reviews for his portrayal as Batman, his co-star Heath Ledger’s acting chops were also noticed. Ledger played Joker, Batman’s arch-nemesis. However Ledger died in early 2008 just after finishing the production of the film.

2. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

The fourth highest grossing superhero film of all time, The Dark Knight is also the 12th highest grossing film of all time. It has earned more than $1.08 billion worldwide. The movie was also critically acclaimed with some publications calling it the best movie of 2012.

The setting of the movie happens eight years after Joker’s reign of anarchy. Batman is forced to return from his exile to save Gotham City from a new enemy, Bane, played by Tom Hardy. He gets help from the enigmatic Catwoman, played by Anne Hathaway.

3. The Prestige (2006)

Bale is directed in this movie by Christopher Nolan, the same guy who was in charge of the Batman trilogy. The story is about two rival stage magicians in London during the end of the 19th century who engaged each other in a competitive one-upmanship. The film also stars Michael Caine, who like Bale appears in the Batman trilogy as Batman’s butler Alfred. It was well-received by critics and moviegoers, earning $100 million worldwide.

4. Batman Begins (2005)

Batman Begins is the first movie in the Batman trilogy of Christopher Nolan, starring Bale as the Caped Crusader. This film explores the origins of Batman, and his exploits against the Scarecrow and the League of Shadows. It was a huge hit, earning $374 million worldwide.

5. The Fighter (2010)

This movie is especially important for Bale as it earned him an Oscar award for best supporting actor. In this biographical sports drama film, Bale stars as the older half-brother of the character played by Mark Wahlberg. The film was critically acclaimed, as it was nominated for seven Academy Awards including best picture and best director for David Russell. Melissa Leo also won an Oscar award for best supporting actress for this film. With a measly $25 million budget, the film went on to rake $129 million at the box office.

6. Empire of the Sun (1987)

Directed by Steven Spielberg, the movie tells the story of a young boy who used to live in a wealthy British household to becoming a prisoner of war during World War II. Bale earned a lot of critical acclaim for his portrayal, even winning the inaugural “Best Performance by a Juvenile Actor” plum from the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures. The movie earned $66 million at the box office.

7. 3:10 to Yuma (2007)

This was both a critically acclaimed and commercially successful movie in which Bale stars with Oscar winner Russell Crowe. In the movie, Bale plays the role of a drought-impoverished rancher who agrees to take a notorious outlaw, played by Crowe, to justice. It is actually a remake of a 1957 film of the same title. The movie earned $70 million worldwide.

8. The Machinist (2004)

Before he became the Batman on the big screen, Bale was the lead star of the psychological thriller, The Machinist. He earned a lot of praises for his devotion to the role, even placing himself on a crash diet to reduce his weight by 63 pounds so he could replicate the character’s skeletal appearance. The film was a flop, however, earning only $8 million worldwide.

9. American Psycho (2000)

Bale played the role of a serial killer in this movie that was adapted from the controversial novel of Bret Easton Ellis. It was a mild success at the box office with a $34 million gross.

10. The Flowers of War (2011)

This historical drama film was shot in China. It is based on a novel by Gelling Yan. It earned $95 million worldwide.
