History of Cineplex Theatres

Cineplex Logo

Cineplex’s history isn’t the history of one company but that of many. One of its earliest connections is with the Famous Players Film Corporation which officially began in 1912. Famous Players would continue to function as one of the country’s leading theatre chains, always being a subsidiary of Paramount Pictures.

Paul Nathanson, the son of the Canadian purchaser of Famous Player’s Canadian subsidies, officially opened Odeon Theatres of Canada in 1941. Odeon then merged with Canadian Theatres in 1979.

Through these acquisitions, Famous Players and Canadian Odeon Theatres were all owned by one parent corporation and was unofficially referred to as the Famous Players/Odeon monopoly of the Canadian movie scene.

On the other side, there was Cineplex Theatres which opened its doors in April, 1979. For a while, Cineplex fought the Famous Players-Canadian Odeon combination. In the end, Cineplex would acquire Canadian Odeon Theatres, forming the Cineplex Odeon Corporation.

In 2003, Galaxy Entertainment merged with Cineplex Odeon, forming Cineplex-Galaxy. Another big merger occurred in 2005 when Viacom sold Famous Players to Cineplex-Galaxy, putting all of the major theatre lines together: Cineplex, Odeon, Galaxy, and Famous Players were all one major chain now.

To reflect this, Cineplex-Galaxy changed its name to Cineplex Entertainment and is the official name the company utilizes to this date. There are now over 160 theatres in Canada and the company caters to over 71 million guests per year.

Cineplex Theatres Innovations

AMC Theatres was the first to introduce the idea of a multiplex theatre, but back then, they had to buy several buildings and connect them to make a single complex. Cineplex solved this issue by building their own multi-screen complex and it became the first multiplex in Canada.

Cineplex is also one of the few that offers VIP theatres and UltraAVX, which are both higher class options than the standard theatre going experience. UltraAVX in particular offers better audio with its 7.1 Dolby Digital system and it also offers larger, more comfortable chairs with extra space.

Cineplex UltraAVX

While Cineplex is a large conglomeration of acquired theatre chains, it still operates several branches under the Galaxy Entertainment name as well as Famous Players, keeping the old culture of their predecessors alive.

Most recently, Cineplex and its new CEO, Ellis Jacob, were praised as one of the leading innovators in Canada due to their partnership with SCENE, a new loyalty program that rivals that of the AMC theatre chain.

With the new Cineplex mobile app you can make purchases online. All you need to show is the digital ticket on your phone, making Cineplex an environment-friendly establishment that is slowly moving away from paper tickets.

How Much Do Cineplex Theatre Tickets Cost?

If you want to watch a movie then the first thing you’d think of is the price of the movie ticket. Luckily, Cineplex movie ticket prices are incredibly low. You can check for Cineplex prices online and you can also buy Cineplex movie tickets through their official website.

You can also use both traditional and electronic gift cards to make ticket purchasing much easier. As it’s the 21st Century, a mobile app is a near necessity in keeping up with competition, allowing guests to view movie show times and purchase tickets on their phone.

That’s not all, the app doesn’t add any additional service fees on top of the ticket price, it provides exclusive news on the latest trailers, footage, and interviews, and it’s available in French! You can find more information on the app here.

As we mentioned, there is also the SCENE rewards program which nets you points for every purchase you make, from tickets to concessions. Some of the major benefits from joining include:

eSports at Cineplex

Cineplex is one of the first cinema chains in the world to screen video game tournaments on the big screen. It’s an extremely smart move from the company as well.

eSports is one of the fastest growing industries in the world, with revenue growing 43% in 2016, reaching a total of $463 million. Growth is expected to continue in the coming years, with predictions of revenue hitting a huge $1.1 billion by 2019. Cineplex has prized themselves to take full advantage of this industry.

They frequently screen and host tournaments at select locations. As of writing, the next event in line of the Canadian Championship of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare set for 26 March 2017. Tickets are currently on sale for an extremely low cost of $9.50 for general admission, and $40 for the fan experience with some awesome perks.

  1. Using my Scene points for restaurants instead of movies now because of the aggressive increase in points. Movies have once again become very expensive. I used to go once a month, now I go twice a year.

  2. Most companies accept 55+ not 65 now days ? still too expensive for those of us 60 living on a budget. We miss the theatre experience on account of how expensive it is. And who wants to go to a movie & not enjoy the popcorn ?

  3. I used to go to the movies all the time but the prices have gone up so much I might go once or twice a year. You’ve lost me as a customer

  4. Went to see Rocketman at 5pm on Saturday July 13 at the Cineplex Vip cinema in Don Mills. Two adult tickets cost us $52 – absolutely outrageous. If I had had any idea ahead of time I never would have gone.
Yes, it is a very comfortable environment , but this is just highway robbery. That is my first and last time at a VIP theatre.
