Hoyts in Australia

Hoyts Australia

Hoyts originally began as a small American travelling circus, known as Hoyts Circus. Dr Arthur Russel was one of the group’s members who, after leaving the circus, proceeded to lease St. Georges Hall in Melbourne and show short films for the public on Saturday nights. From there, Russel realised the popularity of films and founded Hoyts Pictures Pty Ltd.

Between its origins and the present day, Hoyts has been passed through a lot of hands. Twentieth Century Fox, the Fink Family, Hellman and Friedman, and Consolidated Press Holdings have all been owners of the company throughout its life. However, neither of them are the owners today.

ID Leisure Ventures, an investment company run by Sun Xishuang is the current owner of Hoyts. It’s believed he paid up to $900 million to become the new owner.

Val Morgan is part of the Hoyts Group involved in cinema advertising. It currently dominates the market share holding over 95% of revenue in Australia. That’s not all, the distribution arm of Hoyts has become the largest independent film distributed in Australia.

All of these individual parts put together, form a dominant company in the Australian movie industry. One which doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon.

Hoyts offers a range of extras movie-goers can choose from if they wish which you can see below.

Wide Range of Seating Choices

When you want the best seat in the theatre, you should check out the Hoyts Lux program. These cinemas are optimised for pure luxury, rather than just filling up seats.

You’ll be granted access to the exclusive bar, which offers a wide selection of food and drinks. Alternatively, you can have your food and drinks delivered to your seat during the screening. If that’s not luxurious, we don’t know what is.

Hoyts has also taken comfortable seating to a unique level with powered recliner seating. With each seat comes extra legroom, wide seating arrangements, and side table with a large cup holder. Think of it as enjoying the comforts of home but with the luxury of an ultra-large screen and uber-comfortable seats.

But when you want a different kind of seating arrangement, you can always buy tickets to the Bean Bag Cinema. Here, you can relax on oversized bean bags while watching your preferred movie – or as the kids call it, chill out.

Bean Bag Cinemas can be found at Hoyt’s Melbourne Central, Mt Druitt, Southlands, Carousel, and Garden City.

Total Movie Experience Guaranteed

Speaking of the ultra-large screens, Hoyts have their now famous Xtremescreen cinemas. These are known as some of the biggest screens in Australia with the largest being the 28-meter Blacktown screen. That’s not all, Xtremescreen cinemas are equipped with Dolby Digital Plus, a world-class sound system format that provides more realistic sound effects.

Why stop with Xtremescreen when you can also have IMAX? IMAX (Image MAXimum) is expanding to more and more cinema locations around the world, including Australia. We know you’ll love the superior resolution of the images on the big screen, which means a better viewing experience than on older film systems.

Combine the latest state-of-the-art technology as mentioned above, with the generally low priced movie tickets Hoyts offers, and you’re bound to have a good time checking out the latest Hollywood blockbuster.

How Much Do Hoyts Tickets Cost?

As you can see in the price list above, Hoyts ticket prices do vary depending on which cinema you choose to watch the movie in, and what type of experience you’re looking for.

For example, IMAX tickets come in at the highest price due to the expensive technology required to produce and show the film. On top of that, if you’re after the 3D IMAX experience, you can expect to pay some of the highest prices in Australia without any sort of VIP experience added on top.

Fortunately, Hoyts hasn’t shied away from the worldwide phenomenon of cheap movie Tuesday. On all of their tickets across the board, you’ll find they’ve all been discounted on Tuesday. Hoyts have coined the term for these discounted tickets as  – Super Tuesday.

Every Tuesday – Tickets Are Cheaper

We like that quote, and we’re sure you do too! Who doesn’t like cheap movie tickets?!

Ticket Discounts

On top of cheap Tuesdays, there are a number of additional offers and promotions Hoyts runs allowing you to shave some of the cost off of your ticket price.

Some common offers at Hoyts cinemas include:

  • Prams at the Pix – All tickets for just $11 with kids under 5 years completely FREE – details
  • Optus Perks – Discounted movie tickets from $11.50 for adults, $9 for children, and $26 for LUX – details
  • HSBC Wednesdays – 2-for-1 tickets at any Hoyts, for any movie, every Wednesday – details

Hoyts, like many other cinemas chains around the world, offer a program in which customers can join to further receive discounted tickets and special promotions.

Hoyts Rewards - Discounted Tickets Program

Specifically, Hoyt’s program is called “Hoyts Rewards”. There are two tiers of the program as follows:

  • Bronze – Free – Discounted movies of the week, pre-sale tickets on selected movies, and candy bar promotions
  • Silver – $13 annually – 10% back in Hoyts dollars on most purchases, FREE movie ticket upon joining, discounted movies of the week, pre-sale tickets on selected movies, Monday-Friday day pricing for seniors, and Free extra scoop of Ben & Jerry’s with a purchase
